The Lonk is a rare breed of British black-faced hill sheep, bred on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Pennines.
The breed can be traced back for several centuries with one existing flock having full records to 1740. It is particularly associated with the area around Haslingden, and is also known as the ‘Improved Haslingden’.
One of the largest hill breeds native to the UK. it is an agile sheep, that is strong boned and well wooled; well able to withstand the exacting environment of upland areas. It can be kept year-round on upland pasture.
Lonk sheep have clear black and white legs and face, with the two colours not merging. They have a white fleece that should be totally free of any kemp.
